The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square is Known for being the oldest archeological museum in the Middle East; the Egyptian Museum is home to the largest collection of Pharaonic artifacts in the world! Its collection contains relics dating back from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman Era. Roam through the halls of this museum and witness the greatness that once ruled over these lands!
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) is the first museum that offers its visitors a general overview of all the different historical eras that encompass Egypt. With so much uncovered over the past thousands of years, it is not hard to see why there is a whole museum dedicated to this great civilization! There is much to discover in the halls of the NMEC. However, only three exhibitions are currently open to the public.
1. Main Hall- Highlights the most important achievements in Egypt beginning from prehistoric times, pharaonic and Greco-Roman times, Coptic and Islamic eras, and ending with modern-day Egyptian objects and artifacts.
2. The Mummy Hall- This hall is the crown jewel of the museum. It is home to 20 royal mummies- 18 Kings and 2 Queens, who ruled from the 17th to the 20th dynasty. The most famous mummies are Hatshepsut, Thutmose III, and Seqenenre Taa II.
3. The Dye House- This dye house dates back to the first century of the Fatimid period (A.D. 969-1171) and is perfectly preserved evidence of ancient dye houses in Egypt.
